Sleep apnea is a potentially life-threatening condition where a person stops breathing during sleep. Many Americans, both young and old, unknowingly suffer from sleep apnea. When left untreated, sleep apnea has been associated with high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, weight gain, memory problems, depression, headaches, and in the most severe cases, death.

Think you might be suffering from sleep apnea, but aren’t sure? Ask Dr. Gile at your next appointment.

Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common type. Obstructive sleep apnea is when the soft tissue of the throat becomes so relaxed that it blocks the airway during sleep. Often times, snoring may be the first sign of obstructive sleep apnea, but it isn’t the only sign. Many will experience a lack of energy, insomnia, trouble with memory, and feeling short of breath. Because of the severity of sleep apnea, any time you or a loved one experience any of these symptoms it’s important to be evaluated by a specialist.

Dr. Gile works closely with a sleep study specialist in the area who helps with the diagnosis of sleep apnea. If you have completed a sleep study and symptoms of sleep apnea are mild to moderate, Dr. Gile can make an appliance to help. Contact us for more information!
